What I Learned In School Today: Keeping up with special education is a challenge.
Today I attended a seminar focused on legal updates in special education. Needless to say, the information was critical to my job as an administrator. Prior to being an assistant principal, I was a regular education teacher, primarily in 4th grade. I always had special education students in my classroom, but other than what I learned in classes I had taken, but knowledge of special education processes was limited.
One of the many takeaways from today’s seminar is how every case is different depending on the student and his or her disability. This makes complete sense, but also makes it difficult when learning the processes and procedures for working with these students, particularly when challenging issues arise. Staying current is important for any educator or leader and special education laws and regulations are amongst the most important areas to focus one’s energy.
