Make a Student Feel Special

What I Learned In School Today: It’s worth taking a moment to make a student feel special.
As the kids were leaving school for the day, I was standing outside waving goodbye to them as I normally do during dismissal. One boy excitedly walked by and pointed to his clothes at which point I noticed he was wearing a tie and a nice dress shirt, very similar to what I wear on a daily basis. I eagerly pulled him aside, grabbed my phone, and we took a selfie together, which I then posted on our school’s Twitter feed.
This little act brought a genuine smile to the student’s face. It was a wonderful yet simple moment, but it made him feel special. Kids need to know that we care. They need to know that they are more than test scores and rule followers. Every child deserves to have an adult make them feel special. Plus, we looked great in the picture!
