What I Learned in School Today: The first day is always a whirlwind.
The entire summer is focused on preparation. Once the school year finishes and loose ends are tied up, all focus is shifted to the following school year. Creating class lists, developing schedules, building professional learning plans, and writing goals for the upcoming year consume all time and attention until the next year begins.
Today teachers returned. Granted, most teachers in our elementary building have already been back frequently review curriculum, setting up their classrooms, and preparing, but today was the true day one where we were officially back. My principal and I had prepared and organized thoroughly, but the truth was quickly evident. Day one is always a whirlwind. Faculty meetings, picking up keys, distributing class lists, finding out what is missing or no longer working properly, catching up with staff, handing out assignments to support staff, and on and on.
Is it possible to be completely ready for day one? Organization and preparation are enormously important, but going into day one, be prepared to go with the flow. You never know what might come up.
