Passionate People

What I Learned In School Today: Surround yourself with passionate people to remain enthusiastic.

This evening several administrators front the Garnet Valley School District presented to the Education Committee made up of members of the district’s school board. The purpose of Education Committee meetings is to share what is going on in each of the schools in terms of academics, programming, and activities. Usually these presentations are filled with students sharing their terrific accomplishments and teachers sharing their innovative instructional strategies, but with this meeting coming at the onset of the school year the presentations focused on the work done by administrators throughout the summer.

This summer, my fellow assistant principals and I were fortunate enough to visit Columbia University's Teachers College for an intensive institute on reading workshop. This evening we shared our experiences with the school board and thanked them for affording us the opportunity for this terrific professional learning experience.

My greatest take away for the evening was a reminder of how invigorating it can be to surround oneself with passionate educators. We all into the field of education for one reason or another and while the reasons may be different person to person, they all go back to working with kids, making a meaningful impact, and being a great educator. It is so exciting to work with fellow administrators who are enthusiastic and passionate about education. While it's easy to get mired in the stressful aspect of our jobs, it is exciting to focus on the reasons we got into this field in the first place. Surround yourself with passionate people and your job will be fun.
